I’ve just finished preparing a small truffiere plot on the NSW south coast. I’ll be planting trees in early Sept but I’m still not sure which tree to favour. I’ve heard there’s not much luck with hazels in Tasmania .. yet oaks take more time ( & space) to produce. Has anyone got an opinion either way?
Many Thanks.

From a truffle hunters view, oak are by far more supperior in producing. Hazlenuts are hard to get the truffles out from under the roots, they have limbs and branches close to the ground that need trimming all the time. For ease of harvesting you need easy access to the base of the tree. The oak trees seem to produce within 5 years just the same as the hazlenut, but the oak will produce for longer. But there will be plenty of people at the AGM on Saturday that you can talk to re which trees, Fran.Posted 3 years ago #

We are looking for trees suitable for WA conditions. We are in Bridgetown which is adjacent to Manjimup and has great water and the ideal climate.
Is it better to buy local trees? Hazzelnuts seem to do well in Manjimup
